A bit about A Fine Sift

A black and white photograph of Yawen finishing off 6 small French Pastries in a commercial kitchen

Hi, my name is Yawen and I bake celebration cakes.

After years working as a graphic designer, I found my passion in French Pastry during my Commercial Cookery and Patisserie training at William Angliss Institute.

Like many others during Melbourne lockdowns, I packed-up and headed to the country. To keep me baking in between cancelled classes, A Fine Sift was born as a pop-up, to allow me to experiment and bake in my new community. Huge thanks to Blue Tongue Berries and PJ Cupcakes, for opening their hearts and kitchen doors to me in those early days!

Since October 2022, I have been lucky enough to bake from my home kitchen in the beautiful National Trust listed Trawool Valley. We are a few doors up from the popular Trawool Shed, and a couple of minute from the beautiful Trawool Estate.

Natural occurring colours, extracts, and unbleached ingredients are used in my creations. Better for you, better for me, and better for the environment! All buttercreams used are fully cooked therefore safe to be eaten by everyone, including pregnant ladies. All my products are made on premises with traces of dairy, gluten, eggs, sesame seeds, nuts (including peanuts), soy and alcohol.

An old black and white photograph of a small bakery in Taipei Taiwan with a construction site in the background

I recently found this precious photo above of my Great-grandfather’s bakery in Taiwan, from the 50’s. He studied baking before opening his own store, serving Taiwanese cakes (think moon cakes and Taiwanese wedding pastries), as well as western cakes and sweets. The bakery was then passed down to my grandfather. Some of my earliest memories were stealing sweets, from the glass jars on the counter top!

How and when do I make a payment? Please pre-paid your order through Direct Debit two weeks prior to pick-up. Bank details will be provided upon order confirmation. Sorry we do not have EFPOS facility, nor do we keep cash on-site.

How long will it take?
A minimum of two weeks notice for cakes pictured on the website,
a minimum of four weeks for custom multi-layer cake requests, and

Where do I pick-up my order? Pick-up is pre-arranged and usually falls on Saturdays between 12–1pm from Trawool, Victoria. Address will be provided upon order confirmation.

Do you deliver?
Yes! Seymour or Tallarook: ~$15
Broadford, Yea, Avenal: ~$29
Nagambie: ~$40
Please contact us to discuss if your area is not listed above. All orders over $500 are delivered free of charge, for deliveries within 50 km round trip from Trawool.

What about cancellations? For COVID-19 provision/cancellations, we will need at least five business day notice, so you can be given a cake credit. This credit is valid for eight weeks only, so note it down! Alternatively, ask us about contactless pick-up!

What about vegan/gluten free/halal/pregnant friendly/themed cakes?
There is a vegan celebration cake being tested in the kitchen, so stay tuned.
For gluten free, our Basque cheesecake is flourless but it may have traces of flour particles as it’s baked in a flour forward facility.
Chat to me for halal, our vanilla extract contains a smidge of alcohol.
For novelty cakes, please contact Peta at PJ Cupcakes Seymour.

Can I add fresh flowers to my cake? When adding fresh flowers, think local and organic. All imported flowers needed to be dipped in glyphosate to enter Australia. Even some commercially sold local flowers are grown using pesticides, so always check with your florist! Remember the flowers will be in contact with your cake and these pesticides are NOT for human consumption. Read more about it here. Alternatively, ask me about my hand-made edible flower offerings.

I have more question, who do I contact? Connect with us here!
